Chernivtsi

8 May 2021

Visiting the university here is obligatory. First destination after getting out from the train, no ifs or buts. The entry fee has grown with time, but the univ is still totally worth the ticket price. I was amazed to learn that I had somehow missed the botanical garden behind the main building, when I was here the first time. The garden is not huge, but very nice nevertheless.

It was hard to believe that I was only about 100 metres from this magnificent tree, but missed it just because it was behind a building. It is very much possible that this was simply the most beautiful object in Chernivtsi.

Absolutely not a planned coincidence, it was the time of magnolia blossom. I was not even sure that I had the right to witness this beauty.

OK, enough with this botanical garden for now.

There were QR-codes installed into the paving stones here and there — obviously, for tourists. I did not use these because I prefer using the map. I googled, and the QRs turned out to be the marks on the touristic route called «Discover Chernivtsi» (Ukr. Відкрий для себе Чернівці). That rather short route contained twenty-something points, all of them more or less in the old town.

A door was wide open in one of the numerous old buildings, so I came in. There was this old spiralling stairwell inside.

This board had announcements of a curated style, thoroughly laid out on a grid. All of them about houses or land for sale.

There were pigeons gladly accepting food from humans near the philharmonic. Hand-feeding them was a nice experience. Knowing these birds, I can assume they are still there, waiting for kind humans. Knowing people, I can also assume that these pigeons are well-fed.

It was time to leave. On our way to the bus station, we took a slow circular ride on a Ferris wheel in order to check whether it was a good vantage point, or not. From the highest point of the circle, we could see some old city in one view direction:

If you wish to see Chernivtsi in bloom like this, note the time of year: it was the beginning of May.
